ways in which we honor them. Below is a glimpse into some of our recent learning engagements. Enjoy!
In our current unit "How We Organize Ourselves", students are learning about the contributions of significant people, places, and events and the
The 2014-2015 school year has been off to a great start. The students have been busy learning new first grade routines, procedures, and expectations. We have had a great time beginning to build our classroom community. Here is a glimpse into some of our daily happenings!
Parents, thank you for your support! The PTO Presentation Night gave our first graders the opportunity to share some of their learning from our "Sharing the Planet" Unit. Our class presented a skit they wrote about our Peace Mentor Rigoberta Menchu Tum. They did a wonderful job! In Reading Workshop, students have been learning to gain a deeper understanding of
the books they read by reading like actors and directors. By reading this way students analyze setting, characters, and story events to bring books to life. Students have been working in actor/director partnerships as a way to build their oral reading fluency and overall reading comprehension. They have been doing an amazing job as actors becoming the characters in the books they are reading, and as directors guiding the actors to more fully become the character. :) As part of our "Share the Planet" unit, students learned how the actions of individuals can create opportunities. Students learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream for the world, and then wrote about their own dream for the world.
Students then created these portraits of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. using only construction paper, glue, and scissors. All shapes used to create the portraits were cut freehand. The students' art work and dreams for the world are amazing and inspiring. They are now hanging outside of our classroom, please come by and enjoy their work! I'm so excited to share some of the wonderful learning that goes on in our classroom! Here are just a few images of student learning engagements from before the winter break. They include photos from our pumpkin inquiry, use of technology in mathematics, and the student inventions from our "How We Express Ourselves" summative projects. Enjoy!
