The IB Influence at Wakeland
The International Baccalaureate Programme is at the heart of the Wakeland curriculum and our inquiry philosophy. We believe in providing authentic learning experiences which provide children with the opportunity to construct their own knowledge and understanding of the world around them.
In all academic areas students are encouraged to take notice of their observations, evaluate information and apply their personal experience and prior knowledge towards future learning. One structure we often use to achieve this in the class is something called the “Workshop” approach which we use in reading, writing and math!
IB Mission Statement
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
POI Overview
Six units of inquiry make up Wakeland's Programme of Inquiry (POI). The five essential elements of the PYP's written curriculum are incorporated into each unit to provide a rigorous, engaging and globally significant unit of study. The five essential elements are knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action.
Curriculum Framework
In a PYP school, your child will learn 40 high-interest and globally significant concepts from Pre-K through 5th grade. Each unit is relevant and tied to state and national standards. Students learn concepts under Who We Are, Where We Are In Place and Time, How We Express Ourselves, How We Organize Ourselves, How The World Works, and Sharing The Planet.
